LUCY T. SMITH
Lucy T. Smith, an international award-winning botanical artist, has been documenting the diversity of the plant world through her art and scientific illustrations for over thirty years. For twenty-four of those years, she worked as a freelance artist for the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew which holds hundreds of her artworks in its collection. Her exceptional talent has led to her illustrations being featured in numerous scientific journals worldwide. Lucy has taught botanical art for many organisations, and currently leads the teaching of botanical illustration courses at Kew Gardens.
DRAWING AND PAINTING PLANTS - MONDAY 23 SEPTEMBER - 10:00 am to 3:00pm
All skill levels - from beginners up. Price £75.
In this one-day workshop, Lucy will teach you the techniques of botanical art and illustration. Using seasonal flowers from the Walled Garden, participants can try sketching from life (outdoors and/or indoors) to create realistic drawings to which we will then add watercolour. Techniques covered will include measured drawing, perspective, understanding plant structures and mixing accurate colours. Bring your own sketchbook with good quality paper (cartridge or watercolour paper), ideally a larger size (A3), a hardback sketchbook (spiral-bound or sewn is best as you can draw in it without the need for a supporting board). Also bring pencils (2H and HB), a sharpener, a measuring device (clear ruler or dividers to aid in drawing) and watercolours or coloured pencils to add colour to your sketches.
