Charlotte Relf

Experimental Embroiderer

Semi-Awake State

Recent graduate Charlotte Relf is a textile designer who specialises in Embroidery with a difference. Her passion for the extraordinary is evident throughout her work making brave colour decisions and using curious combinations of fabric and textures. Much of Charlotte’s inspiration is drawn from her surroundings, exploring new places and opening her mind to new experiences. She takes inspiration from contemporary artists such as Dan Lam, Serena Garcia Dalla Venezia and Francesca Belgiojoso.

Charlotte completed her Final Major Project at Birmingham City University of Textiles, Titled, ‘Semi-Awake state’ shown at New Designers Islington in 2019. An eye catching series of hallucinatory landscapes that were influenced by personal emotions, and visuals experienced within the confused state of awakening.

Combining unusual cinematic images haphazardly and using non-traditional materials with exaggerated embroidery stitches, Charlotte captures tension in surreal settings, the viewers eye is drawn to the unequal area due to the asymmetry.

Charlotte strives to make impactful designs that evoke a reaction from her viewers through a combination of digital graphics, collage, mark making and material exploration. Her sketchbook is a starting point and she then ventures out of the restrictions of paper to sample testers and developments.

Each piece stands alone as a featured interior art work or as a complete collection.
