HM Queen Elizabeth II
On the afternoon of Thursday 14th June 2001, we were delighted to host a visit from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to view the recently completed Sunbury Millennium Embroidery.
The present Embroidery Gallery had not yet been constructed and the various panels that make up the embroidery were grouped around the Lendy Lion monument in the centre of the Walled Garden under a temporary tented structure.
The visit was attended by 350 guests, including the 147 embroiderers who created the embroidery itself. School children waved flags in the car park and many people lined the streets outside, enjoying the perfect weather.
Her Majesty was guided through the garden by David Brown, who inspired the project, as she met with many of the embroiderers who each described to her their contributions to the work. She also viewed a model of the current building that houses the gallery and embroidery, which opened in 2006.
